Specialists in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) care for the most complex obstetric patients across Iowa as the only tertiary academic referral center and the only certified Level IV maternal and Level IV neonatal medical center in the state. The MFM practice is full scope, which includes both consultative and longitudinal prenatal care provided in the outpatient and inpatient settings.

There are clinical collaborators in multiple adult and pediatric subspecialties across UI Health Care. There are currently 5 faculty, including the Department Chair and DEO.  MFM has 3 total fellows, with approval by ACGME to add an additional fellow in 2025 to begin in 2026. The division has experienced significant turnover in faculty since the last review. Dr. Stephen Hunter and Dr. Jennifer Niebyl retired. Drs Kimberly Leslie, Janet Andrews, Heather Anaya, Nina Nuangchomnong and Nicole Masse left to take positions elsewhere. Dr. Allison Allen was recruited in 2021 and left in 2022 for personal and family reasons. We successfully recruited her back to the division on the clinical track for July 2025.

MFM faculty staff the inpatient antepartum service at Medical Center University campus with daily rounds as well as cover in-house calls on labor and delivery. Medical Center Downtown campus patients requiring MFM care are transferred to MCU.  All MFM outpatient activities are located on the Medical Center University campus for proximity to Labor and Delivery. If the division is successful in recruiting additional faculty as planned, more outpatient clinic space will be needed, and this should occur on the MCU campus as well as other UI Health Care ambulatory sites (such as Iowa River Landing). Inpatient and outpatient patient volumes have been projected to increase steadily year after year.
