UI Health Care provides quaternary health care for the state of Iowa and the region, serving a complex referral patient population.

Clinical Care

  • Treatment Modalities: The program covers surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy for gynecologic malignancies.
  • Graduated Responsibility: Fellows progressively take on more responsibility in both surgical and medical management of patients.

Surgical Experience

  • Technical Skills: Fellows develop skills in comprehensive pelvic surgery, radical tumor debulking, minimally invasive procedures, and more.
  • Volume: Over 500 new patients are seen annually, providing ample clinical experience.

Robotic Training

  • Facilities: The University of Iowa has a dedicated Robotic Surgery Training Room with a da Vinci Standard robot for training available for residents and fellows from various departments to improve their skills.

Clinics

  • Weekly Clinics: Fellows attend clinics one day per week, managing and planning treatment for patients with gynecologic malignancies.
  • Support: Clinics are supported by midlevel providers and a nurse clinical care coordinator.

Call Responsibilities

  • Rotation: Fellows rotate weekly on call, handling outside calls and making rounds with residents and faculty.

Clinical Rotations

  • SNICU and Radiation Oncology: Fellows rotate through the Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and Radiation Oncology for diverse clinical experience.
  • Learning Opportunities: Includes ventilator and vasopressor management, vascular access, and radiation therapy techniques.
